Sighting in Valbonne, December 10, 1976

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on December 10, 1976 in Valbonne (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Around 10:10 p.m. one December evening in 1976, a witness saw a point of light move across the sky from east to northwest. It made no sound and traveled at about the speed of a shooting star. The object was oval and silver in color, and left no luminous trail. It stayed in view for a few seconds before the landscape hid it from sight.

At about 1:00 a.m. on 11 December, a member of the military watched an oval object cross the sky from north to south at high altitude for three to four minutes. This one left a luminous trail behind it.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified). Its conclusion was that the witnesses had seen passing luminous phenomena, and it considered it highly probable that both had watched atmospheric re-entries.
