Sighting in Veytaux, October 15, 2021
Switzerland
Sighting on October 15, 2021 in Veytaux (Switzerland). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an atmospheric optical phenomenon (halo, sun dog…) (class A).
What happened
A couple travelling by car to Switzerland were stuck in a major traffic jam on the motorway, stopped on a large bridge just outside a tunnel, near the Fort de Chillon. The witness thought they saw a second sun about 15° north of the real one, at roughly the same height and about the same distance away. This patch of light looked dimmer, as if it had only a quarter of the real sun's strength. It seemed fixed in the sky, and at first the witness noticed no movement.
The couple stayed on the bridge for almost twenty minutes, and the phenomenon remained visible throughout. The witness had the impression that it sank gradually as the sun set. Only one account was collected, but it was fairly complete and came with sharp photographs that place the phenomenon in its surroundings.
GEIPAN classified the case as A. The witness's description, and above all how the phenomenon looks in the photos, show that it was a parhelion, or sun dog, an optical phenomenon linked to the solar halo that appears 22° to the right or left of the Sun, at the same angular height. Landscape features visible in the photographs made it possible to determine its position and confirm that it was where a parhelion would be expected.
