Sighting in Vieille-Église, September 17, 1979

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on September 17, 1979 in Vieille-Église (Pas-de-Calais, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 7:45 a.m., a witness noticed a motionless point of light in the sky. It was white and oval in shape. This single object then crossed rapidly and horizontally through the area where three aircraft were flying, and disappeared toward the east.

An appeal for witnesses was published in the local press, and several people then contacted the authorities. They reported seeing a particular object pass through the sky the same day, though over a wider time window. Their descriptions varied and did not allow the object to be identified precisely. GEIPAN therefore classed the case C, for insufficient data: it was the sighting of a white luminous object moving quickly.
