Sighting in Villebois-Lavalette, January 5, 1977

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on January 5, 1977 in Villebois-Lavalette (Charente, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Around 6:30 p.m., two people were driving when they noticed a red-orange light that intrigued them. It seemed to come from a mass moving from the southeast toward the northwest. No particular noise was heard while it moved.

The sighting lasted about ten minutes, and the witnesses saw sparks during that time. The light then dimmed slowly and gradually until it went out completely.

On several occasions, other people using the same road as the two motorists had also noticed sparks coming from a power line running southeast to northwest. No other testimony was gathered about the phenomenon. Because of the lack of information, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data), concluding that it was the silent movement of a luminous phenomenon.
