Sighting in Villeneuve-les-Bordes, November 11, 2016

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on November 11, 2016 in Villeneuve-les-Bordes (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a celestial body (star or planet) (class A).

What happened

At around 10:00 p.m., the witness was outside their home looking at the sky. To the northwest, to the left of the Big Dipper and at an estimated elevation of about 60°, they noticed a motionless point of light resembling a very bright star. Looking at it more closely, they saw it move slightly in a zigzag pattern, over a range equivalent to 10 to 15 cm at arm's length, first one way and then the other, before returning to a position close to where it started, though slightly offset. The witness then turned to the east and spotted a second phenomenon much like the first: high in the sky, star-like in appearance, with small irregular movements. The observation ended while both phenomena were still visible, and its exact duration could not be determined.

The witness also reported similar sightings on other dates, both before and after 11 November 2016. The investigation looked only at the 11 November observation, with information on the other occurrences given in an appendix. The case has medium consistency: a single witness, but plenty of information supplied, along with photos relating to the later sightings.

The investigation concluded that the witness had seen two stars, Vega and Capella. The gap of about 30° in elevation between the witness's estimate and Vega's actual position was not considered a major obstacle, since the estimate was given in daylight for something seen at night. The impression of movement can be explained by the autokinetic effect. The case was classified A.
