Sighting in Vincennes, September 4, 2016

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 4, 2016 in Vincennes (Val-de-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an atmospheric optical phenomenon (halo, sun dog…) (class B).

What happened

At around 7:45 a.m., from the kitchen of their home on the seventh floor, the witness noticed a very bright phenomenon in a cloudy sky, which kept appearing and disappearing. It stayed motionless throughout the observation, which lasted 45 seconds in total. Only one witness account was collected.

GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and low consistency, since it rested on a single witness and a short observation. Although the sky was heavily overcast at the time, satellite images show gaps in the clouds in the direction the witness was looking. This fits the way the phenomenon appeared and then faded gradually. The viewing direction and the description of the phenomenon also match the Sun very closely. However, some uncertainty about the height of the phenomenon prevents a firm conclusion that it was a misidentification. The case was classified B: probable misidentification of the Sun.
