Sighting in Vulaines-sur-Seine, November 12, 2021
Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on November 12, 2021 in Vulaines-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
Between 6:08 and 6:25 p.m., the witness was on their terrace with their two daughters. In the sky to the south-southeast, about 20° above the horizon, they noticed two very bright white points of light right beside the Moon and at the same height as it. The two lights stayed motionless. After ten to fifteen seconds of observation, they went out one after the other, their brightness fading gradually until they vanished completely.
Only the witness was interviewed, since the other two people were children, and there is no photo or video. GEIPAN therefore rated the case as having medium consistency.
The investigation concluded that the witness probably saw the landing lights or search lights of two aircraft, most likely military ones. The look of very bright stars, the white color and the low height in the sky all fit this explanation. The brevity of the sighting is explained either by airplanes seen head-on for a short moment before changing heading, or by the steerable search lights of helicopters. The apparent lack of motion probably comes from the great distance and short duration, and the gradual disappearance from a gradual change of heading. That same day, a large joint military exercise was ending in eastern France, involving Mirage 2000 jets, NH90, Gazelle and Tigre helicopters and an A400M from air base 123 at Orléans-Bricy. Two aircraft may have been returning to base, but the times and flight paths were unavailable and GEIPAN could not obtain the air traffic radar maps. The case was classified B.
