Sighting in Walbach, October 2, 2013

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 2, 2013 in Walbach (Haut-Rhin, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

Two teenagers saw a bright, round object with green trails falling toward a neighbouring village. It happened at around 10 p.m. The gendarmerie of Sierentz recorded the key points of the account carefully and made checks with the relevant services.

Several other pieces of information were then compared with the sighting. According to the BOAM database, a camera near Nancy had recorded a fireball in the southwest at 9:57 p.m. Other large fireballs were also reported that night, and several observers in the Paris region described the event. Accounts differed on the time, ranging from "around 10 p.m." to 10:15 p.m. The witness had given 10:15 p.m. but had made a phone call at 10:03 p.m., just after the sighting. This detail, well picked up by the gendarmes, made it possible to tie the observation with certainty to the fireball captured by the camera.

GEIPAN classified the case as A: the object was a fireball caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere, that is, a natural meteorite.
