Sighting in Wimereux, October 2, 1954

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 2, 1954 in Wimereux (Pas-de-Calais, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Around 4 p.m., on a sunny day, a witness was about to photograph a dolmen when they noticed a light-coloured, elliptical object in the sky moving from the southwest toward the northeast. They took two pictures in quick succession. The sighting lasted only a few seconds, and the phenomenon vanished before the witness could change the settings on their camera. The witness then sent the negatives to the newspaper "Radar".

The gendarmerie learned of the event from the press and did not meet the witness until 15 October. The prints had been enclosed only with the first dispatch of the report, so the copies held by GEIPAN contain no photographs. In the late 1970s, GEPAN carried out a brief inquiry. It found that the photos did not appear to have been published in the magazine, and that efforts to trace the witness, then about 58 years old, had come to nothing.

The description was too brief, and with no photographs available, the sighting could not be analysed. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for insufficient data.
