Sighting in Yerres, September 15, 2012

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 15, 2012 in Yerres (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at around 11 p.m., several people looked up and saw a number of yellow-orange points of light moving silently across the sky. The lights went out gradually. Only one of these people gave a statement to GEIPAN. The witness described yellow points that, as they faded, turned into a dark shape, and that drifted slowly in a horizontal direction.

The investigation found that this description fits Thai lanterns very well. The fact that a fireworks display took place that same Saturday evening also supports this explanation. The wind, very light and mostly from the southwest, is not inconsistent with it. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: a probable sighting of Thai lanterns, that is, flying lanterns.
