Sighting in Yerres, September 19, 2014

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 19, 2014 in Yerres (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness saw an object shaped like a conical drum, with an exceptionally bright glow. It moved slowly in a zigzag pattern, then disappeared at the horizon behind some trees. The phenomenon crossed the sky in a few minutes on a weekend night, drifting only slightly toward the northwest.

GEIPAN concluded that this white luminous shape was very probably a Thai lantern, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of movement fits the wind recorded at Orly, which was almost nil or very light and coming from the south. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
