Sighting in Aigrefeuille, March 15, 1983

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on March 15, 1983 in Aigrefeuille (Charente-Maritime, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

A crater of unknown origin was found in a wheat field. An investigation was carried out between March and April 1983 to work out what had caused it. The first idea, an underground explosion of munitions left over from the Second World War, was dropped. The investigators then turned to a natural cause.

The investigation placed the formation of the crater on 15 March. That day, a major storm had struck, with a violent clap of thunder. The crater was shallow. The case was classified B: the crater was probably created when a lightning bolt struck the ground.
