Sighting in Amiens, August 6, 2016

Somme, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 6, 2016 in Amiens (Somme, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at about 11:05 pm, a couple was in a garden looking at the sky. To the south-southwest, above a nearby building, four points of light appeared. They moved silently in a group formation. They converged on a single point, rose vertically, and then vanished. The sighting lasted only two or three seconds. Only the main witness gave an account. The person with them simply confirmed what they described, and the main witness said this person was less intrigued than they were. Other friends were there to watch the sky too, but they were not looking in that direction. The account lacks precision, notably about the angular size of the points.

The investigation considered several explanations. A laser-type light show does not fit with the perfectly clear sky. A swarm of insects lit up, either by fireflies or by city lights, fits poorly with the way the lights disappeared. A meteor could explain the brief duration, but the points drew together instead of breaking apart, and no luminous trail was reported. None of these explanations could be retained with a probability above 50%, and none could be ruled out entirely. The case shows a moderate degree of strangeness, but the lack of information and cross-checking prevents confirming it. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C: insufficient data.
