Sighting in Antilles, January 23, 1980

France

Sighting on January 23, 1980 in Antilles (France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

On two consecutive evenings, witnesses at various places in Martinique and Guadeloupe saw unusual luminous phenomena above the ocean. The sightings took place between 6 and 7 p.m. According to the descriptions, the witnesses saw one luminous object, sometimes several, which may or may not have been followed by trails of multicoloured light.

The sky was clear. The witnesses saw the phenomena for only a few seconds, as the objects quickly faded from view while they moved across the sky.

After comparing the different accounts, GEIPAN concluded that the most likely explanation was atmospheric re-entries. The case was classified B, meaning probably identified.
