Sighting in Argences, May 4, 2008

Calvados, Normandie, France

Sighting on May 4, 2008 in Argences (Calvados, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Sunday evening, between 10:45 and 10:50 pm, two people on their terrace saw three yellow-orange sources of light moving. The sighting lasted about fifteen seconds. The witnesses heard no sound. The lights drifted slowly from the west toward the north, then vanished all at once.

This sighting came on top of many others reported during the same period across the wider western part of France. A good number of those reports were explained by releases of Thai lanterns.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified). The witnesses' description, the behavior of the points of light, their yellow-orange color and the fact that the sighting took place on a Sunday evening led to the conclusion that this was probably a flight of three Thai lanterns, most likely released during a family celebration.
