Sighting in Artonne, April 1, 2013

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on April 1, 2013 in Artonne (Puy-de-Dôme, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 9:15 p.m., two people who were at home noticed an orange glowing ball, which they described as yellow-orange with no trail at all. It drifted slowly and silently across the sky, which intrigued them. It then moved away more quickly and vanished all at once.

The witnesses gave a detailed account. The weather record for Vichy showed a north wind, and the ball moved in the same direction as that wind. These details clearly match the path of a Thai lantern, a flying paper lantern. It had probably been released during a celebration held for the public holiday, Easter Monday. GEIPAN classed the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
