Sighting in Audun-le-Tiche, August 5, 2009

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on August 5, 2009 in Audun-le-Tiche (Moselle, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the planet Jupiter (class B).

What happened

In the night of 5 August 2009, at around 2 a.m., two people at home noticed a very bright, circular object. The main witness filmed it and, while doing so, saw that it was moving horizontally at a very slow pace. The object was located to the left of the full moon.

The investigation, based on the astronomical configuration and an appeal for witnesses, established that the sighting took place on a night with a full moon. That configuration points very probably to the planet Jupiter, which was especially visible at that time of year, with an apparent magnitude of -2.8 and a maximum angular diameter of 48 arc seconds. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Jupiter.
