Sighting in Bagneux, July 22, 2009

Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 22, 2009 in Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly before 1 a.m., a witness at home saw four pale yellow lights moving slowly toward Paris. They went to get their camera. When they came back, only one light was still visible. They photographed it, and it then disappeared too.

The GEIPAN considered that the description matched that of flying lanterns, known as Thai lanterns. The wind recorded in Paris at the time of the sighting blew in a direction that supports this explanation. The case shows low strangeness and moderate consistency: the questionnaire contains few details and differs somewhat from the information given by phone. The investigation concluded that it was very probably a mistaken identification of Thai lanterns. The case is classified B, probably identified.
