Sighting in Belfort, January 21, 2020

Territoire de Belfort, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on January 21, 2020 in Belfort (Territoire de Belfort, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

At around 4:45 to 5:00 pm, the witness looked out of their window and saw a dark object in the sky. Well below it, they made out four horizontal bands of different colours: red, green, blue and, for the fourth, possibly yellow, though they were not sure. The witness took a photo of the phenomenon. The object kept moving across the sky, rotating around a vertical axis, until nightfall.

GEIPAN considered the case solid, given the photo and the very good quality of the testimony. While trying to work out what they had seen, the witness found the answer themselves: it was a kite flown in a district of the town called the Pépinière, fitted with a GoPro camera. GEIPAN classified the sighting as A: an identified kite.
