Sighting in La Neuvelle-lès-Lure, May 30, 1989
Haute-Saône, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
Sighting on May 30, 1989 in La Neuvelle-lès-Lure (Haute-Saône, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
At about 11:15 pm, three gamekeepers on a surveillance round noticed three floodlight-like lights giving off very bright flashes at very short intervals. The lights stayed motionless for about twenty seconds, then shot straight up at very high speed, moving in zigzags.
A few seconds later the phenomenon came back over the witnesses and stopped at the spot where it had started. A red light then came on between the three lamps, and the whole thing set off again, changing direction several times. It made no sound at any point. Shortly afterwards a Jaguar fighter jet flew past, but the witnesses could not have mistaken it for what they had watched.
Checks made with the nearby air base could not confirm the three witnesses' account. GEIPAN was unable to identify the phenomenon and classified the case as D (unexplained): an object moved silently at very high speed, with abrupt changes of direction.
