Sighting in Bézenet, July 5, 2022

Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 5, 2022 in Bézenet (Allier, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

One evening, the witness was standing on their doorstep at home, facing south, when two points of light passed overhead. They were stark white strobe flashes. Both came from the west and moved east, side by side and in step, at a speed the witness compared to that of an ordinary satellite. According to the witness, the gap between them matched the wingspan of a glider flying a few metres above the ground. They also heard a faint airliner-like noise, but its movement did not match that of the lights.

The GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency: there was only one witness and no photo, but the account was fairly precise. The description strongly suggested aircraft. Lights described as strobe-like resemble white flashing anti-collision lights, which can be the only ones switched on depending on the mission, and the sound heard was that of a troop transport aircraft. The CAPCODA centre of the French Air and Space Force confirmed that a patrol of three military aircraft returning from a mission had flown over the site at the time given by the witness, on a path entirely consistent with that of the lights. Two of those aircraft were undoubtedly the ones the witness saw. The case was classified A.
