Sighting in Biéville-Beuville, June 2, 2013
Calvados, Normandie, France
Sighting on June 2, 2013 in Biéville-Beuville (Calvados, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).
What happened
On a Sunday evening at 22:59, a witness noticed an orange ball passing silently across the sky. Intrigued, they took a photograph of it. According to their account, the ball moved in a straight line from the northeast toward the southwest.
The investigators noted that an orange ball following a straight path late on a weekend evening suggested a Thai lantern, and the witness's photos fitted that explanation perfectly. Météociel reported a light northerly wind. That does not quite match the direction the witness described, but the difference can be explained by local geographical conditions. When contacted by phone, the witness said they had since seen Thai lanterns, on 14 July, and had recognized the same kind of object.
GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness had observed the passage of a Thai lantern.
