Sighting in Billom, February 17, 1976

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on February 17, 1976 in Billom (Puy-de-Dôme, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8:50 p.m., a motorist saw a very bright red sphere for a few seconds. It was flying at low altitude and moved very fast from north to south. The official report is imprecise about the exact date: it gives 27 February 1976, whereas the case file is referenced under 17 February.

Several people in the area were questioned. All said they had noticed nothing unusual that evening. Because there was not enough information, GEIPAN classified the case as C. The investigation concluded only that it was a brief sighting of a red sphere moving quickly across the sky.
