Sighting in Bogny-sur-Meuse, February 29, 2008

Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on February 29, 2008 in Bogny-sur-Meuse (Ardennes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

The witness reported several sightings of luminous phenomena made from their home. In their written statement they had placed the event on 22 February 2008, around 10 or 11 p.m., but during the interview with the investigator they corrected the date to 29 February, at about 9:30 p.m. Over a period of two years, they had seen white "fireballs" on three occasions, always in the evening. The balls moved down the hillside as far as a stream.

No other witness came forward, and no trace of fire was found on the ground. An expert on transient atmospheric luminous phenomena (lightning, plasmas) was consulted. In the expert's view, all the parameters were consistent with geomagnetic light phenomena, known as "earth balls" or "earth lights", which are linked to geological faults. A power line and a watercourse were present, and the watercourse runs in the same direction as the spheres moved.

GEIPAN classified the case as B: the sightings were very probably geomagnetic luminous phenomena.
