Sighting in Bordeaux-Saint-Clair, November 1, 2015
Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France
Sighting on November 1, 2015 in Bordeaux-Saint-Clair (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Capella (class A).
What happened
At about 7 a.m., a witness was looking at the stars. They picked out a point of light at random and then saw it split in two. They filmed it with a camcorder, zooming in, and found the shape on the footage, a multicolored diamond, odd. No other witness came forward.
The witness placed the light due west, at the same height as the Moon. The investigation identified it as Capella. To the naked eye, the witness saw nothing very strange and had thought of a satellite. At most, the star's twinkling may have given an impression of doubling. All the strangeness the witness perceived, and so the reason for the report, came from the video.
This was, once again, a typical case of artifacts produced by a camera filming a star while zooming. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the sighting was Capella.
