Sighting in Brunstatt, June 24, 2015

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 24, 2015 in Brunstatt (Haut-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

Around 9:45 pm, a witness who was watching television had their attention drawn outside by about ten bright, coloured lights drifting above the hill and the treetops. The sighting lasted roughly fifteen minutes, and no sound was heard. Only one account was collected. On the questionnaire, the witness mistakenly gave the date as 25 June instead of 24 June.

In their account, the witness described movement toward the west, but their drawing showed a path from north-north-east to south-south-west. Overall, the lights moved from north to south. This fits the north-west to north wind recorded at Mulhouse-Basel: a light northerly wind of 7 to 11 km/h at 9 pm, turning westerly by 11 pm.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of LED balloons or Thai lanterns. Lights crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest such objects, probably released nearby at the end of a private party, possibly a Saint-Jean celebration. The multiple colours and the long duration point more towards LED balloons, since Thai lanterns are usually mostly yellow-orange because of the flame that lights them.
