Sighting in Champigny, September 2, 2013

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on September 2, 2013 in Champigny (Yonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At 12:45, a witness noticed an object moving silently across the sky. It made a few partial turns, and during these maneuvers it looked round or elongated, depending on the angle from which the witness saw it. It was dark and matte in color. The witness was alone and took no photographs.

The investigation noted that an aerodrome offering autogyro flights was located nearby. Autogyros are not required to carry lights, which fits with the absence of any reported lighting. The object's shape and color, and for the most part its movements and speeds, were consistent with this explanation. GEIPAN concluded that the witness had probably seen an autogyro climbing. The testimony was rated as moderately consistent, since it lacked precision and came from a single person without a photo. The observation was considered not very strange, as the object could well have been an ordinary one. The case was classified B.
