Sighting in Neuvy-Sautour, May 11, 2023

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on May 11, 2023 in Neuvy-Sautour (Yonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In the late afternoon, a passenger on a bus travelling along the N77 and passing through a hamlet looked outside and saw a curtain of rain beneath a very dark cloud. An unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) then seemed to emerge from the cloud, leaving behind a grey trail that lingered. The UAP was visible for only two to three seconds, while the trail could be seen for several minutes. Trees and buildings frequently blocked the view. According to the description, the UAP followed a descending, winding path, and the trail had a similar shape. Only one account was collected, and no photo of the UAP exists.

The investigation considered that the passenger may have seen two separate things: a bird, and the upper edge of a distant cloud. However, the lack of precision and the brevity of one of the two sightings prevented any conclusion. Nothing confirms that the UAP and the trail were connected, since they were not seen at the same time. Their close succession and similar shapes may have led the witness to think that one caused the other. Strangeness and consistency were both rated as medium (single witness, no photo). GEIPAN classified the case as C: unidentified phenomenon due to insufficient information.
