Sighting in Chartrettes, April 22, 2009

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on April 22, 2009 in Chartrettes (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 4:45 in the morning, an amateur astronomer noticed an object that stayed motionless in the sky. Its color shifted strongly, going from green to red to blue, and its brightness also varied, rising sharply and then fading. According to the witness, the phenomenon lasted about 15 seconds.

The investigation found that this description closely resembled a temporary reflection of light off a satellite, either an Iridium satellite flare or a glint from a rotating satellite. GEIPAN asked the witness for more details but received none, and the hypothesis could not be checked because too much time had passed since the event. The case, considered of little strangeness, was classified C because of insufficient information.
