Sighting in Chécy, July 3, 2014

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on July 3, 2014 in Chécy (Loiret, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Capella (class A).

What happened

Early in the morning, the witness was looking out of a window when they noticed a very bright orange light, fairly stationary, between two trees. It vanished after about two minutes. The witness reported that there were clouds at the time.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witness had seen the star Capella. That night it stood about 15° above the horizon, to the north-northeast, which fits a star-like point of light that does not move, or hardly moves. At such a low altitude, changing colors from twinkling are likely. The clouds account for the light disappearing after two minutes.

The witness had given north as the direction, but the layout of the streets and buildings points to a roof window facing north-northeast, and the only tall trees between which the phenomenon could have been seen lie in that same direction. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: an astronomical observation of Capella.
