Sighting in Cheveuges, July 28, 2013

Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 28, 2013 in Cheveuges (Ardennes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 3:20 in the morning, two witnesses were on the first floor of their home when they noticed two red-orange lights, round and flattened in shape. The lights crossed the sky along a straight, slightly rising path. The sighting lasted one to two minutes, and no particular sound was heard. Only one account was collected from the two people.

GEIPAN noted that several red-orange lights moving together in a straight line for about two minutes, on a summer night between Saturday and Sunday, strongly suggest Thai lanterns, probably released at the end of a party. More than 400,000 of these lanterns are sold in France each year. The weather record for Charleville showed a weak, unstable wind that was highly variable at the time. This does not fully confirm the hypothesis, though it remains compatible with what was observed. The case was classified B, probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
