Sighting in Chevilly, October 21, 2021

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on October 21, 2021 in Chevilly (Loiret, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 8:30 pm, the witness was driving along the D6 when a small green light, fairly low on their left, caught their attention. It first moved slowly, then suddenly picked up speed. The witness stopped at once and got out of the vehicle to photograph and film the object with their phone, then watched it cross the sky. They noted three oddities: the movement, a shape that looked triangular, and the lack of any sound. They estimated the object to be about 30 m away. This was the only testimony collected, and a photograph was attached to the statement report.

The investigation concluded that the witness very probably saw an A400M military transport aircraft that had come from air base 123 at Orléans-Bricy and was taking part in a very-low-altitude flying exercise. The light colours are those used in aviation, and the aircraft's presence near the base was confirmed. The A400M flies fairly slowly at very low altitude; the apparent bursts of speed matched the moments when, after turning, it lay more across the witness's line of sight. Its real distance was probably about 3,600 m. The wind blew from the north, opposite to the direction of observation, so it did not carry the sound to the witness. Seen at night, low on the horizon and at a shallow angle, the dark aircraft showed no propellers or tail, hence the impression of a triangle; its other lights, at first hidden by the fuselage, became visible in the photograph once the viewing angle changed. The case was classified A.
