Sighting in Circourt, November 14, 1979

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on November 14, 1979 in Circourt (Vosges, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 5:42 p.m., under a clear sky, a witness driving a car with a passenger suddenly saw two orange-red points of light. The two lights, fairly close to each other, settled at an altitude of about 100 m above the woods, then went out one after the other. The witness, an air force officer on leave, noticed no sound during this phase.

About 30 seconds later, an almost simultaneous double "bang" was heard. The witness thought it might have been a patrol flying at high altitude breaking the sound barrier. One minute after that, two lights appeared at the same altitude and distance as the first pair, but further north. They too went out one after the other, about 5 seconds later.

The local press reported that several other people in the area had also seen the phenomenon. However, the gendarmerie gathered no other testimony and no further details. The case remains unexplained and was classified D by the GEIPAN.
