Sighting in Croismare, October 3, 2017

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 3, 2017 in Croismare (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

One afternoon in October, between 2:00 and 2:15 pm, a witness was flying their drone near a railway line. They suddenly noticed a bright "flash" of light. Back home, they downloaded the footage recorded by the drone and found two very brief luminous "flashes" on the video. Only one account was collected: the witness had seen one flash directly and then found two more on the recording.

After a quick analysis of the video, GEIPAN considered that the phenomena filmed by the drone could simply be small pieces of debris carried by the wind, passing very close to the camera. The very intense flash seen from the ground was most likely not connected to the two objects visible on the video, and may have been a reflection on the ground. A B classification (probable confusion with small debris) could have been considered. However, the phenomena were extremely fleeting and show up on only a single frame of the video, leaving too little usable data. The case was therefore classified C, for insufficient information.
