Sighting in Cuers, April 27, 2008
Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on April 27, 2008 in Cuers (Var, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).
What happened
At about 4:17 a.m., a witness standing at their window was intrigued by a luminous phenomenon that was circular and flattened in shape and moved very quickly across the sky. The object traced circles, among other movements. The witness heard no particular noise, and no other account of the sighting was collected.
The investigation brought several points together: the shape resembled a laser beam projected onto a layer of low cloud, the movements were like those of the lasers commonly used in nightclubs, and the object had a "tail" that could be the end of the beam before it reached the cloud base. The direction of observation was the same as that of the nightclub, the night (Saturday into Sunday) matched the laser's use, and the gendarmerie checked on site that the laser could be seen from the witness's home. GEIPAN therefore concluded that the object was almost certainly the laser of the nightclub "Le Fashion Room", used regularly on Saturday nights from 11 p.m. until about 4 a.m. and reflected off low cloud or local fog, probably present that night. The case was classified A, observation of a light animation.
