Sighting in Curgies, February 17, 2013

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on February 17, 2013 in Curgies (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Two witnesses were sitting in their vehicle at around 7 p.m. on a Sunday evening when they noticed several red lights lined up in the sky. The lights looked stationary to them.

The GEIPAN found that this description fits Thai lanterns: several red lights, apparently at low altitude, on a weekend evening. The weather record shows a light wind from the east, so the lanterns could have been released from Curgies, probably at the end of a party. With that wind, they were in fact drifting slightly away from the witnesses, who therefore could not clearly make out their movement.

The case is classified B: probably Thai lanterns.
