Sighting in Dakar, November 24, 1959

Senegal

Sighting on November 24, 1959 in Dakar (Senegal). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8:20 p.m., a witness aboard a ship in the commercial port of Dakar, Senegal, saw a luminous phenomenon moving across the sky. It was made up of several bright points and surrounded by a halo. It lay to the southwest, roughly 15° above the horizon. It sped up, then began to follow a descending path. The halo grew progressively darker until the phenomenon vanished. The sighting lasted five minutes.

In the report they wrote, the witness stated that four ships, at different locations, had observed the same phenomenon at about the same time. Only one account was actually collected, however.

The investigation noted that the description could fit a distant aircraft seen head-on with its headlight on. Because of insufficient information, GEIPAN classified the case as C.
