Sighting in Darnieulles, August 5, 2015

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on August 5, 2015 in Darnieulles (Vosges, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Between 10:00 and 10:30 p.m., on a summer night with a clear sky, two witnesses in the same town saw several orange balls drift past in silence. The balls twinkled and crossed the sky within a few minutes, coming from the southeast. Their brightness faded gradually until they went out. One of the two witnesses compared the flickering to the flame of a candle.

The investigation found that these features strongly suggest Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. Weather data from Épinal, about 10 km away, showed a light and highly variable wind during the evening, from the south at 9 p.m. and from the north at 10 p.m. This wind could not be matched with the movement that was observed. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
