Sighting in Didenheim, July 5, 2015

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 5, 2015 in Didenheim (Haut-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 10:30 p.m., the witness was looking through a large glass door when they noticed a yellow point of light heading toward them. They stepped out onto their terrace and saw the object turn off course while blinking rapidly, then vanish at great speed. They filmed the sighting: the footage shows streetlights in the distance and the moving point of light. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation concluded that this bright yellow light, which blinked and moved slowly low on the horizon, matched an aircraft preparing to land. Its apparent disappearance fits a change of heading, after which the aircraft was no longer facing the witness. In this configuration, an aircraft can be seen from more than 20 km away. The witness lived 20 km from Basel-Mulhouse airport, which has heavy traffic, and 10 km from the Mulhouse-Habsheim leisure airfield. The wind recorded at Mulhouse blew from the southwest to west. Because the GEIPAN took up the case too late to determine which aircraft was involved, it classified the case B: probable sighting of an aircraft about to land.
