Sighting in Dommartin-lès-Toul, September 4, 2025

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 4, 2025 in Dommartin-lès-Toul (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a celestial body (star or planet) (class A).

What happened

During the night of 3 to 4 September 2025, a witness was on an unlit path running alongside an equestrian centre. The sky was partly clear. They noticed two distinct luminous orbs.

The first, red, appeared above the treetops. It moved slowly, with slight changes in altitude, which gave an overall impression of stability. The witness could not link it to any aircraft or known celestial object. The second, white and larger, looked motionless to the naked eye. In the photos and videos, however, it seemed to rise gradually, and it showed none of the characteristics of an identified ground-based or airborne light source.

GEIPAN received only one account. The strangeness of the case rested mainly on how the witness perceived what they saw. The account was remarkably precise and came with usable photos, which strengthened the case's consistency, meaning the amount of information considered reliable and objectively supported.

The investigation compared the photos with the state of the sky at the times of the observation, reconstructed with the Stellarium software. This overlay showed that the witness had mistaken Jupiter, Betelgeuse and Venus for the phenomena. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of celestial bodies.
