Sighting in Ecquevilly, November 15, 1993

In the night of 14 to 15 November 1993, at around 4:30 a.m., the witness was woken by their dogs barking. On getting up, they found that the dogs and the horses were all looking in the same direction. From another room of the house, the witness saw through the window some stationary lights illuminating the ground, about 300 metres west of the home according to the gendarmerie. They heard no sound, even with the window open. The lights then began to move toward them.

When the lights were above the house, the witness made out a luminous circle made up of white, yellow and slightly bluish lights of differing intensities, along with flashes of "black light". The sighting lasted 20 to 25 seconds. When the witness went outside, the lights had gone. They gave a statement at the gendarmerie on 24 November 1993 and later handed in sketches. The gendarmes found no traces and no other witnesses.

GEIPAN contacted the witness again in July 2018 to re-examine the case. The analysis, based on the photographs taken on site by the gendarmes, the sketch and the testimony, made it possible to reconstruct the phenomenon's path and appearance. Its apparent size was probably modest, about 5° at closest approach, smaller than the sketches suggested. That is still too large for the helicopter hypothesis, which would have required the aircraft to pass about 55 m away and be heard. The number of lights, the lack of navigation and anti-collision lights, and the ground lit by "black light" also argue against it. Since no field investigation was possible so long afterwards, the case, close to being unusable, was classified D: unexplained.
