Sighting in Eschbach, March 30, 2009
Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France
Sighting on March 30, 2009 in Eschbach (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At 11:50, the witness was watching fighter jets in the sky when a dull metallic noise rang out. They then noticed a metallic grey-white sphere hanging motionless in the sky. It looked larger than the aircraft. The sphere vanished, then reappeared a few seconds later. Frightened, the witness went back indoors.
This 2009 case is thinly documented and was submitted only belatedly to the panel of experts working with GEIPAN. The link between the noise and the sighting is not obvious. Air navigation data were not available (military manoeuvres? air traffic?), even though the sighting took place along the axis of the runway of the nearby air base, and military aircraft are often sent up to "check" flying objects in their airspace. Without a thorough investigation, the case, which lacked substance and anything particularly strange, was classified C, insufficient data.
