Sighting in Essey-lès-Nancy, November 16, 2010

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on November 16, 2010 in Essey-lès-Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 6:40 a.m., a driver saw a motionless, luminous phenomenon shaped like a saucer in the sky, a long way off (several kilometres). Around its edge were about thirty white and green lights. The sighting lasted two to three minutes. The witness got out of the vehicle to photograph it with a mobile phone, but the phone was not sensitive enough. They put the phone away, and when they looked up again toward the phenomenon, it had disappeared. No other witness account was collected.

According to the GEIPAN, how strange the case seems depends mostly on how the witness interpreted what they saw. If the saucer description is taken at face value, the strangeness is very high. If the object was too distant for that description to be reliable, the strangeness is low, and a simple mistake with a star remains possible, a common error for stars or planets seen low on the horizon. The case has medium to low consistency, because the position and direction of observation are imprecise and there is no photograph. The GEIPAN classified it C, for lack of cross-checking and sufficient information.
