Sighting in Fameck, March 31, 2010

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on March 31, 2010 in Fameck (Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In the early evening, the witness was on their balcony when they noticed a dark object with no definable shape moving about in the sky. They had time to take photographs and called their spouse. Only one witness account was collected during the investigation.

The object was distant, estimated at 2 to 3 km away, and moved in an erratic way, as shown by the reconstruction made from the photos. It disappeared into the clouds. The wind was steady that day, around 25 km/h. GEIPAN rated the strangeness as moderate and the consistency of the case as good, thanks to the photographs.

According to the investigation, the photographed object could match many kinds of airborne bodies between the witness and the nuclear power plant. The most likely was a large bird, which is what the witness's spouse first thought. A kite, a radio-controlled model or a tethered balloon were also possible: wind could account for a balloon's behaviour, but not its disappearance into the clouds, unless the clouds had hidden it. A helicopter was considered, given the heavy air traffic in the area, but the photographed shape fitted poorly. The object's behaviour was not strange in itself. As these hypotheses could no longer be checked, the case was classified C, for lack of additional information and cross-checking.
