Sighting in Favières, May 2, 2010

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on May 2, 2010 in Favières (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness watched for a few seconds, at around 3:20 in the morning, a very bright sphere moving fast toward the southeast before it suddenly vanished. A little later a second sphere appeared, then it too disappeared, making a 180° downward loop as it went.

GEIPAN compared this description with that of luminous flying lanterns: two spheres going out one after the other, which would fit the fuel running out. The sighting took place during the night from Saturday to Sunday, which makes this explanation all the more plausible. Despite several follow-up requests from GEIPAN, no further information was obtained from the witness, so the investigation could not go any deeper. The case is classified B, a probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
