Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on August 5, 1980 in Flaxlanden (Haut-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

Around 11 p.m., several people saw an object cross the sky from east to west. It was elongated and gave off a light at its center. It suddenly changed course, heading due south and then due east. Later that same evening, the witnesses noticed further passes of the same kind.

The following night, at about 11:45 p.m., an object was again seen in flight, this time heading northeast. No other testimony was collected.

The investigation noted that Basel/Mulhouse airport reported a large number of aircraft flights that evening. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had probably observed aircraft, and the case was classified B (probably identified).
