Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on October 6, 1988 in Gannat (Allier, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At around 9:30 p.m., several witnesses noticed three bluish sources of light moving slowly across the sky above the area. Gendarmes called to the scene saw the phenomenon too. It disappeared for good at around 12:30 a.m., about three hours later.

The investigation first looked into the possibility of a helicopter flight, without success. It eventually established that the lights came from a hypermarket that was testing laser projectors ahead of an advertising event. The case was classified A: the sighting was explained by these laser projectors.
