Sighting in Gilette, August 16, 1991
Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on August 16, 1991 in Gilette (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
A group of five children aged 7 to 10 saw a blue, egg-shaped mass of light in the night sky after 11 p.m. It looked about 30 cm across at arm's length and had holes from which dimmer blue lights emerged, varying in intensity and turning orange. The mass stayed in place while swinging rapidly back and forth like a pendulum. After ten seconds of watching, a blue flash appeared, followed by a series of further flashes. The mass switched on and off every five seconds. Another account describes the object as seen from a different place and angle, which suggests it was passing over the valley.
The account reached the gendarmerie two days later, brought by a UFO enthusiast who had heard it the previous day. The children were questioned in the presence of their parents, but no formal statements were drawn up. The gendarmerie merely noted that the children confirmed what had been reported.
GEIPAN considers the case highly unusual: an entirely luminous blue object with holes, which switched on and off, with flashes that did not reach the ground. A size of 30 cm at arm's length would equal 30 metres wide at a distance of 70 metres. However, this was a third party's description, with no direct testimony taken by the gendarmerie or GEIPAN. GEIPAN no longer takes indirect accounts into consideration, as they are insufficient and unreliable, and the strangeness of this case would have required solid consistency. The case is therefore classed C, testimony unusable.
