Sighting in Graçay, April 25, 2021

Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on April 25, 2021 in Graçay (Cher, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 4:30 a.m., a driver was taking the slipway of the A20 motorway towards Vierzon, with a work colleague in the passenger seat. The driver suddenly noticed a very bright light, yellow with an orange area in its middle. It appeared to be low, level with wind turbines a few hundred metres away, or else behind them. It first moved slowly from left to right, then shot off towards the north-north-east at extreme speed and vanished.

Only the driver gave a statement to the GEIPAN. The account was precise and matched the data recorded by six cameras of the FRIPON network. The witness found the event strange because they could not recognise what they saw: an object that seemed large, changed speed and direction, and left no trail. After analysis, the strangeness was rated low. A bolide was indeed present that day, in the area and at the time given, and several FRIPON cameras observed and recorded it. The wind turbines proved a useful reference point for reconstructing the scene. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of a bolide.
