Sighting in Presly, September 1, 2014

Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on September 1, 2014 in Presly (Cher, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 12:55 in broad daylight, a witness was drawn outside by the sound of an aircraft. Looking up, they saw a point of light cross the sky in a straight line, moving, as they reported it, from the northeast toward the southwest. No one else came forward with a report of the sighting.

The investigation looked at several possibilities. Bright points visible by day can result from sunlight reflecting off aircraft or satellites. Flightradar records show many airliners passing over the witness, but heading from north-northwest to south-southeast, not in the direction the witness gave. A high-flying military aircraft that does not appear on Flightradar cannot be ruled out. Calsky data lists many satellites over the area, normally invisible in daylight; at least four (SPOT 4, SPOT 5, ARGOS and KOMPSAT) followed northeast-to-southwest paths consistent with the witness's description. However, these satellites are not known for producing daytime flares the way Iridium satellites do, although this is not physically impossible.

GEIPAN could neither eliminate nor confirm any of these explanations. The case, which was not very strange, was classified C because of insufficient information and a lack of corroboration.
